We tend to ignore our feet — they get dirty, they’re settled into shoes all day, and sometimes they smell. But putting a little care into this part of the body can really pay dividends in health and wellness. Our feet take a lot of abuse all day, and when we use a few minutes to care for them, we can be surprised by the huge effect on overall well-being. This care becomes even more powerful when we combine it with essential oil therapy.
There’s lots of new research on how our feet effect our bodies. We may be able to excrete toxins through the feet, and lots of moms swear by the “Vaporub” trick of curing a cough by putting Vicks on feet throughout the night. (If you use this trick, try swapping your usual salve with Eucalyptus Oil mixed with a carrier oil for a cleaner, healthier essential oil version.) Research even says that the comfort level and temperature of your feet has a lot to do with how well you sleep!
We mostly already know how to make our feet feel better — it’s all about soaking, massaging and moisturizing. The trouble is actually doing it. The good news is, adding essential oils to these practices can not only make us excited to try them again, but actually adds healing power every step of the way, turning our troubled feet into healthy feet and putting the pep back in our step.
Try adding oils like Lavender or Peppermint to a foot bath for a calming or energizing soak (pour some Epsom Salt in too, if you’d like). Rub your feet with coconut oil mixed with Lavender before bed for a good night’s sleep. And don’t forget to experiment with whatever oils you need at the time, whether they be for healing, happiness or general wellness, and add them to your foot treatment ritual as well.
Treating your feet right takes a little time, but it’s a great way to dedicate a few minutes just for you and to get reconnected to your body each and every day. Doing that can make you healthier and more ready to take on the world with your family and friends.
